Join us as we explore the American pioneer era! Travel to the wild west and meet cowboys, pioneers, Indigenous peoples, immigrants and people from many cultures, mountain men, trappers and traders, the first 12 presidents of the United States of America, and many more of the people living in America in the first half of the 19th century. We'll be covering events like the Lewis and Clark expedition, the westward movement, the Alamo, the Gold Rush, the Oregon Trail, and much more. Class time will be spent talking about some of the most memorable people and events of the early 19th century in America, as well as playing games, making crafts, and working on projects. Students will walk away with a foundation of knowledge in early American history - knowing the basics about important events as well as what daily life was like for different types of people. (Please note that this class will also discuss, in an age-appropriate manner, serious and sensitive topics such as war, death, disease, slavery, racism & prejudice, natural catastrophes, and related.). Supplies needed: 1 1/2’’ or 2’’ binder, double-sided tape, glue stick, scissors, colored pencils, and three-hole punch. All material will be shared with students via Canvas and print-outs handed out in class. Homework: 2-4 hours/week, spent on reading and working on projects & crafts. (Please note that these hours are estimates. Times will vary student-to-student and sometimes week-to-week.). Grading: Students will be graded on class participation (30%) and homework (70%), using a 10-point scale.
