In this high school English class, we will study genres and how it relates to writing and works of literature. Assignments will range from writing in the style of the genre we are studying, a variety of essays, reflection questions, etc. There are many different types of literary genres including literary fiction, historical fiction, fable, nonfiction, thriller, horror, mystery, romance, tragedy, dystopian, bildungsroman, and more. When studying historical fiction for example, we will discuss how real events from the past are interwoven in a story of a fictional character that may represent a number of people who went through that event. Then, students will choose a historical event and write their own piece of historical fiction using what they have learned. Through this class students will have a chance to explore many different genres and maybe find the one they connect with the most! Homework – Various assignments to include reading the pieces of literature, writing assignments including stories and essays, reflection questions, etc. Grading – Participation, assignments, quizzes, etc. Required materials – Access to the works of literature
