Conspiracy Theory - a belief that some secret but influential organization is responsible for an event or phenomenon. We hear and read about them often and some have been around for many years. The moon landing was faked. Princess Diana’s death wasn’t an accident. The fire in California is to get rid of evidence in the P. Diddy trial. The CIA assassinated JFK. Area 51. And so much more. What psychological factors drive the popularity of conspiracy theories? What are the psychological consequences of adopting these theories? Through this class we will not only examine conspiracy theories, we will also discuss why people believe them, and is there any truth to them. Looking at both sides of the argument and researching the topics, we will spend the majority of our time discussing these points. Conspiracy theories are intriguing, but by diving into them students will learn how to critically think about a subject and defend their own point of view. - Homework – Minimal and will vary based on the week. - Grading – Participation will be the major area of grading along with small assignments. No tests/quizzes.
